Some poems by our guests ...
A Special Derbyshire B&B
By Anne Smith
EDELWEISS is a beautiful house
in Stanton in the Peak
This lovely bed and breakfast house
Owned by Ian and Jill Avent,
Is where we stayed quite recently
And it was time well spent.
Jill’s father built this lovely place
When she was only eight,
Now over thirty years have passed
And much has changed of late.
Every part is modernised
And lovingly restored
With smart furnishings and fittings
And fabulous oak doors.
It was strange to see the bedrooms
Below the flight of stairs
And bathrooms, so exquisite
Which are fit for millionaires.
The rooms are very airy
The beds are really great
All guests are warmly welcomed
And everything’s first rate.
The gardens are quite spacious,
Jill loves her garden so,
She clearly has green fingers
And likes to see things grow.
Ian plays golf quite frequently
But he’d love to be cutting the grass,
So one day he’ll buy a new mower
And that would be just first class!
Sam, the dog makes you welcome
He fusses every guest,
But just one word from Jill, his boss
And he sits on his mat for a rest.
With magnificent views from the windows
One can see right over the Peak,
Sights spectacular, awesome and grand
Make this Derbyshire Peak so unique.
So thank you Jill and Ian
For a memorable stay,
We’ll recommend your B&B
Please remember Anne and Ray!!!
Be and Be at Stanton in the Peak
By Jill Roberts
Poetry flows across Stanton vale
In the whisper of grass
The fleeting bleating sheep
And idling of horses
Flowers edge the view
And peace defines low decibel
Balconies or lawns
on which to sit and stare
Or stand and muse.
A perfect spot to stay
Away from Brexit clamour
Busy deiseled roads
And unrelenting
work filled days.
A house, well built
Stands open to the view
Exuding warmth and spotless comfort
Wood, stone and Crystal
please the eye.
Cake, tea and smiles greet
Via Ian and Jill
Hosts most barely dare
To aspire to be yet
They deliver with consummate ease..
This is a place to be and be
Not once
Not twice
But whenever time gifts you.
Do not stay away
Head for the hills and the vale.
Stanton Verses
By Mervyn Powell
There is a nice couple called Ian and Jill,
Who have B and B in Stanton up a steep hill.
To stay there is really good, quiet and stlll,
And you leave paying a very reasonable bill!
Ian, clever chap, recognised my birth place by my voice.
I am a proud Bristolian, yes, that’s what I be.
I may not speak proper but that be my choice.
But now living in Oxford, I can talk posh, like OUP.
I cannot compete with Anne Smith the poet
On the web-site of Stanton in Peak B and B.
But I too am a poet, though no one here knows it,
Writing verse at night and sometimes after tea.
I, too, have stayed several days at Eidel Weiss,
German I do not know, so it is ‘Idle Vice’, to me
But in this upright establishment, there is no vice.
At least nothing I could see.
If you are horrified by this verse,
The WI, U3A and my family and friends
Will tell you that I can write much worse!
